A forty-year-old man was being buried; the illness had taken him far too soon. At the cemetery, everyone had gathered — family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

People stood in silence. Some quietly sobbed, others just stared at the ground, unable to believe this was really happening. The coffin was already placed beside the open grave, and a few men were preparing to lower it down when something completely unexpected happened.

One of the attendees, who had been standing a little apart the whole time, stepped closer. In his hands he held a strange object — later everyone realized it was a microphone.

Without saying a word, the man suddenly jumped right onto the lid of the coffin, and at that very moment a cheerful, rhythmic song began playing through the speakers. He started singing and dancing, standing right on top of the coffin, smiling as if he were at a party instead of a funeral.

People froze in shock. Women covered their mouths with their hands, some made the sign of the cross, others shouted:

— This is disrespectful to the deceased!

— Has he lost his mind?!

The music grew louder, and the man kept singing, ignoring the cries and the angry looks. The atmosphere of mourning turned into confusion and outrage.

When he finally finished the song and jumped down, several relatives of the deceased ran toward him, demanding an explanation and threatening to call the police. Breathing heavily, the man lowered the microphone and said quietly:

— We were best friends… A long time ago, we made a promise: whoever goes first, the other must come to the funeral, stand on the coffin, sing, and dance. We laughed about it then, thinking that day was far away. But I gave him my word… and I couldn’t break it.

After those words, no one said a thing. Silence filled the air, and some began to cry. The cheerful song, which moments earlier had seemed offensive, suddenly became the final sign of friendship and loyalty — a promise kept, made in life and honored even after death.
