The new neighbor dumped gravel in front of our house

The new neighbor dumped gravel in front of our house. I politely asked him to remove it, but instead of apologizing, he smiled and replied:

— It’s my problem, I’ll deal with it when I feel like it.

At that moment, I realized there would be no peaceful resolution with him. I decided to handle it my way, and I have no regrets. Since then, the neighbor has started avoiding direct contact.

It became clear to me that he wasn’t interested in having a reasonable discussion, and that we couldn’t solve the issue peacefully. So, I took a decision that I have no regrets about. Soon after, the neighbor began avoiding any interaction with me.

It all started a few years ago when a man, a former soldier, moved into our small village. With his wife, they quickly caught the attention of the locals. People were suspicious of them, probably because they were different from us. But, honestly, I didn’t understand why they attracted so many judgments. After all, they had bought their land legally and hadn’t disturbed anyone.

At first, he didn’t do much. It wasn’t until two years later that he started laying the foundation for his house. Then came deliveries of materials like sand, dirt, and gravel, turning his land into a construction site. One Saturday, while we were at the countryside, we had a “pleasant surprise”: a huge pile of gravel was sitting right in front of our door.

My first instinct was to take care of it immediately, but I decided to wait until the next morning. That morning, I went over to his place, knocked on his door, and calmly asked:

— Why did you dump this pile of gravel in front of my door?

He looked at me unfazed and replied:

— Well, I can’t dump it in front of my door, trucks go by there. But you still have space in front of yours.

I was stunned. I firmly told him:

— Take it away immediately, I don’t want this mess here.

Instead of apologizing, he brushed me off with a smile:

— It’s my problem, I’ll take care of it when I decide to.

At that moment, I understood there was no point in trying to talk it out with him. So, I took matters into my own hands. During the night, with a shovel, I moved half of the gravel onto my own land.

The next morning, he came out in front of his door, clearly shocked by the reduced size of the pile. When he approached me, I calmly said:

— Since you dumped this gravel in front of my door, part of it belongs to me now. Consider it rent.

He stood silent for a long time before mumbling something like:

— Smart, huh?

Since then, we now have gravel we can use to repair our path, and the neighbor avoids any direct contact with us.
